Java Updates

  • Using Java3D version 1.4 or higher
Knexus will run fine with higher versions of Java3D. However, there is an unresolved issue between higher versions of Java3D and DirectX. This issue may sometimes cause Knexus or any Java3D program that uses DirectX rendering to lock up. If this oocurs, just exit the program (select "quit" from the Knexus System Tray icon's right-click menu,) and then restart Knexus.
  • No compatable device found - error message
With some graphics cards, you may need to display settings in order to render the 3D environment. Try changing the color quality setting to 16 bit. You may need to quit Knexus and restart it again after changing the graphics setting.
  • Failed to create rasterizer - error message
You are likely to encounter this error if you changed the display color quality setting while Knexus was active. You should be able to resolve it by restarting Knexus. If this doesn't resolve the problem, then try a different color quality setting.
  • Knexus is unresponsive
Certain other applications may affect the allocation of system resources in a manner that can cause Knexus to freeze. The problem can usually be resolved by restarting Knexus. If this becomes a frequent problem, you can take steps to reduce it. For instance, if you are using Java3D 1.4 or higher, you can uninstall 1.4 and install Java3D 1.3. You can also try unchecking the "enable Java" box in your web browser.
  • Registration key won't work
Assuming that you are entering the key code correctly, it is possible that the encrypted file has become corrupted. If so, this is easy to fix.
Go to the C:\Knexus folder and double-click on "addUser". The addUser utility will repair the encrypted file and then the key code ought to work.
If this fails, you will have to contact support@myKnexus.com.
  • Mouse motion (panning) too coarse or fast
You can adjust the speed and smoothness of the mouse motion by going to the Knexus\config folder and double-click the file called applications.properties.ini. The value for the rotationStepAngle is set on line 10. This value must be an integer and represents the step angle in tenths of a degree (20 = 2 degrees; 5 = 0.5 degrees). The default value is 20 (2 degrees). Smaller values will give smoother and slower panning.
Knexus only reads the config file at startup, so any changes you will have to restart Knexus before the changes will take effect.
  • Widescreen - Tall books cut off or you want a wider view
If you are using a widescreen monitor, you may find that a tall book will be cut off at the top and bottom when using Knexus in full screen mode. This may also occur in a standard monitor if you resized the Library window to a wide configuration.
You can adjust the Knexus display preferences for wide screen by going to the Knexus\cofig folder and double-click the application.properties.ini file.
On the last line of the file (line 13) set widescreen = 1 or 2 and then save the file. You will have to restart Knexus for the change to take effect.
  • Crash recovery
In most cases, Knexus will restart after a general system crash with no problem. However, if a system lockup occurs during a save operation, it is possible that the Knexus database file could be corrupted. If Knexus fails to start because of a corrupt database file, go to the Knexus\Libraries folder. There, you will find three files labeled bookData.mby, bookData1.mbk and bookData2.mbk.
Make a copy of bookData.mby and then delete the original mdata.mby file. Next, rename bookData1.mbk to bookData.mby. Now you can restart Knexus and the system should be restored to the most recent state before the crash.
  • Linked application fails to start
Some programs can only be run from their home directory. When a book in the Knexus Library links directly to such a program, the program may fail to open or to run properly. There is a simple remedy for this situation.
    1. Select "My Computer" from the start menu and navigate to the folder which contains the program you wish to link.
    2. From the File menu or right-click menu, choose New/text document.
    3. Open the new text document in a text editor (like notepad).
    4. Insert two lines. The first line contains "CD " followed by the path to the folder containing the program. The second line is the name of the program you want to run.
For example, if the program were called "myprogram.exe" and it was located at "C:\Program Files\myprogramfolder\", then the file would look like this:
      CD C:\Program Files\myprogramfolder
      myprogram.exe
    5. Save the file with a .bat extension. For example: myprogram.bat
    6. Set your Knexus book to link to the .bat file.
  • Log file and setting debug mode
The log file, located in the C:\Knexus\logs folder, receives warning and error messages from Knexus. If you contact Knexus support, they may ask you for information in the log file. The support staff may ask you to set the logger to a different level. The level is set in the configuration file C:\Knexus\config\log4j-properties. The default level is WARN. It is not recommended that you change this level usless instructed by the support staff.
  • Java Updates
Whenever you update Java, you must reinstall Java3D. It's a good idea to keep a copy of the Java3D installer handy on your computer. The recommended J3D installer is "java3d-1_3_1-windows-i586-directx-rt.exe".Just double-click the file and it takes less than a minute to install.
